Reign of Winter, session 14, The Shackled Hut: the road to Whitethrone continues

Gifts, wolves like to eat little boys, big game, visions of past atrocities by Baba's minions.

Magical cookies from Sylgja
special gift to Sadobras from Sylgja

Some quick bullet points:

•  The party headed back on the road after enjoying the hospitalities of Sylgja and Finngarth.
•  The “care package” they were sent off with included some cookies that made everyone’s tummy feel a little “tingly” when they were eaten.
•  Sadobras received a special package from Sylgia…a bit of religious propaganda.
•  On the first night while everyone was prepping the camp Orm, Nady’s son went missing while collecting firewood (Mjoli is her other son, they are 7 y.o. twins).
•  They stumbled upon a pocket of summer on the 3rd day, found the Megalosaurus in the clearing being stalked by worgs (unknown when the elk was first discovered).
•  The group came across an old ruined village, there an old churchyard had a “haunt” that was triggered when entered and the old clergymen turned into huecuvas.  They were telling the party to run along like they were children.  A “ghostly” battle erupted inside the courtyard: children were being killed by trolls and giants in what seemed to be a vision of something that happened 1400 years ago during the great winter war when Baba and her armies swept through the land killing all the ulfen and infidels in it’s path.

Thoughts from Dalomar:

We leave the hospitality of the odd couple of Sylgia and Finngarth and back on the road toward Whitethrone.  We stop for lunch and notice Sylgja had packed us a special treat of cookies.  Can tell they radiate a feint magic.  Trusting the goodness of our previous hosts we enjoy the treats that tingle when consumed.  "Little Bras" finds a special package that Sylgia left just for him.  Some sort of religious quotes as the two had a special connection in their last conversation.

On the first night out, one of Nadya's twin sons, Orm goes missing while setting up camp.  Can't seem to turn your back on those rascals.  I pick up his trail easily with everyone except for Yoska and Zaas coming along with one new strange addition:  to replace Repent while he recovers from ability damage from the Mindslaver Mold, Noname has summoned a freakishly spawned creature "frogocorn" as his new mount.   A half frog half unicorn- head of a frog with a horn and unicorn hooves it is sure a strange sight.   About a couple hundred feet ahead I see little Orm standing with with a bunch of firewood petrified as he is surrounded by four wolves.  Noname on frogocorn leaps into action being able to navigate the cumbersome snow easier than the rest of us.  Draws the attention of the wolves by charging up and color spraying to mostly no effect except for one wolf.  Yoska decides to rush and join in as well as Zaas calmly states the happenings through message she has up with me all while brewing a potion at the campsite.  The battle ends fairly quickly when we all finally engage the canines with frogocorn absorbing most of the attacks.  Nadya scolds Orm for wondering off so far but is relieved he came out of the ordeal unharmed.

On the third day of travel we come across a strange area where the weather is nice and warm and the harsh winter has been held back.  No doubt the cause of some rebellious druids showing their efforts in combating the unnatural never ending winter.   We make camp again and I head out to find some game to keep our food supplies full.  Usually Sadrobras and I always head out together, but I look over to see Bras snoozing comfortably after the long day of travel.  No sense bothering him I figure.  Enjoy a brief respite for once not having to slog through snow and let myself venture further out to get a chance of finding something. Couple hundred yards out I see a Megalosaurus- a giant elk out in the clearing grazing!  I crouch low and quietly move up closer to about 60 feet.  Find a tree for cover and take out my longbow along with a special arrow I've been saving just for this kind of target- the animal bane arrow found off the corpse of the giant weasel hunter from awhile back.   Take a few deep breaths and let it fly- the arrow hitting true.  The Elk rears up in pain and charges and I'm face to face with large antlers and hooves.  Take a hoof off the shoulder but come back with several slashes with my blade and bringing the beast down after dodging a couple more of its attacks.  As I start to dress the carcass and chop off one of its leg shanks out of the corner of my eye I see two large Worgs coming out of the bushes straight for me.  Only having seconds to react I hurl the leg towards them and scramble up the tree having no time to pick up my bow laying on the floor.  The Worgs relish in the large meal I provided for them as I yell insults at them along with trying to yell as loud as possible for anyone to hear at the camp.  Too far away I surmise as no one came.  Eventually the wolves had gorged themselves and drag away most of the remaining elk.  Finally come down the tree once it seems safe.  Retrieve my bow and haul back the remains of the head in spite to show the others.  It gave the kids a good story anyway.  Might not have been the best idea as that night  I could hear the Worgs out prowling the perimeter of the camp out in the distance.  They never came near though.

Further along the cold and snow of winter gradually returns as we leave the mystery sanctuary area.  Come across an old ruined village.  One structure remains mostly standing from what appears to be an old temple of Desna.  Upon approach an old looking clergyman comes out through the front door and waves us away "run along children, run away!".  We ignore his warnings and continue up into the remains of the churchyard where upon a fearful sight materializes in our midst.  Ghostly images of young children and villagers are run down and slain by large giants and trolls from what seems to be a haunt from what happened centuries ago.  Most of us seem caught up in the fright and are surprised when the old clergyman then transforms into an undead creature known as a huecuva.  Two more emerge from the ruin and we are attacked.  Bras riding Typhoon shows off his deadly cavalier skills against the undead foes and we manage to finish them off quickly before much damage.  Though later on I feel my immune system fighting off a disease from the blow sustained from the huecuva.   Frogocorn doesn't fair as well and later succumbs to some ability damage.  After vanquishing the undead the haunt dissipates and we search the ruin.  Find a nice treasure stash hidden in the floor.

Finally come upon Nadya's relatives small village of Elsprin where we can finally get some temporary rest from the last several days of travel.

Finngarth, The Shackled Hut, Reign of Winter
Finngarth the Moldy

Very brief bullet points below.  Please read Zaaz's account for a better detailed account of the session.

•  Magical globe floating in Radosek's quarters:  this is the key to the portals!  What power and knowledge within this device!  Ley lines detailed, magic revealed!  We can shut it down but now we're trapped in Irrisen....

•  The party explored the rest of the tower, found Nazhena's treasure room and avoided the trapped statue.  Some great treasure including a ring of regeneration!  Oops, maybe not.  Dalomar can't seem to get the ring off.

•  Party travels to Hoarwood but starts to feel sick the further they get away from the path they were on.

•  Gremlins in the night ripped the party off!  Food spoiled!!

•  This crazy lady wants us to find her husband...a troll?  This better be worth it!

•  Sylgja and Finngarth:  Wait, that's no troll!

From the Diary of Zaaz Bloodfortune:

Exploring this level of the tower, first we found Radosek’s room with a few odds and ends.  We then went down to the other door on this level.   Dalomar and Sadobras carefully explored, looking for traps and treasure.  There was a statue of the witch Nazhena.   Really?  Why does every bad one suddenly decide at some point they need a larger than life statue of themselves?   I mean there is no way she is that tall with boobs that big, seriously.  What do you mean you like it.. Quiet you.   You are my voices and you should admire me.   Back to the matter at hand…  Soon the two found a curtain behind the statue hiding another door.  Opening it they found another room with another status… really.. another statue?!   How many does she need…. And a bunch of boxes and crates radiating magic.  Showing caution, Yoska and Hatch tried to use mage hand and telekinesis to get some of the items from the room.  What they found was rich enough to encourage us to get the rest.   As I entered the room, the statue let out a blast of energy at me.   I felt my mind going, pain upon pain, forcing itself against my will.   Just when I thought all was lost I felt a touch on my brow just as mother used to and I came back to myself.   Focusing my will I threw off the attack.   Breathing heavily I studied the statue and used the second sight to examine it for power.   None was there any longer so I moved forward and began examining the contents of the boxes.   Soon we had them all open and inspected.   It was a rich haul.   I say that easily, but it was more wealth than I had ever seen gathered in one place.   For a moment my mind played on this.   I could have all of it.   Siding with the witches of the north I could kill Nazhena and claim this for myself.   Surely this was just a taste of the wealth and power I could aspire to?    Then I thought of that hand on my brow, the dire warning the witches had brought me, the face of Nadya so sad sometimes when I knew she thought of the horrors done to her little girl and I knew.   Down to my core I knew this must end.   This was the wealth of blood and death and we would bend it to the death and destruction of those doing these evils.
Bars of silver, items of magical power, and much more.   We had the witch’s treasury.   To top it off was an item of special distinction, a ring of regeneration.  Thinking of it and the best use for us, I recommended it be taken by Yoska to help keep him safe, but Dalomar also wanted it.   Pulling a coin from the mass we had found, then left the decision to chance and in the end it was to go to Dalomar.   Such a treasure was worth more gold than can be imagined.   Other treasures were found as well.   Books of history, creatures of the north, and much more.   Knowledge is a valuable coin indeed.   All we found we loaded into a bag of holding and slung it onto my back.  Heady I was with what I carried, but the voices reminded me of work left undone…
Returning to the room we first appeared I put down all the wealth, all the weapons, all thoughts and distractions.   This globe floating before me was the key to one of the reasons why we were here in the north.   The portal to the south that allowed the winter to escape its bounds was before me and I must know how to end it.   Intent upon it Grr and I sat on the floor together and discussed what we saw.   I called to the voices and asked their advise, some of it was useful and others as usual fluff.    A map it was of portals and power and lay lines become tangled.   A dirty magic, a magic of tangle.   Why did this call to me?   Something on this thought tickled me.   Conjuration.  This was a portal and thus tightly tangled with Conjuration magic and thus conjuring was the way to break it.   My thoughts coalesced and I exclaimed, yes that’s the way!   Pulling energy I brought forth my own tangle directly into the globe of power.   The web spell I cast overlay its own pattern of energy onto the lines of the ball, bringing a bit of weight to one side of the symmetry required in a conjuration like the winter witches had made.    Weight to break the crucial balance of energies.   The spin of the globe got decidedly wobbly and then with a burst broke apart and dissipated.  I could feel a trickle of the energy bleed into all of us there and stick like the world rewarding our efforts.
The rest was mostly cleanup.   We looted the remaining bodies and burned them.   I took my time to destroy those damn statues.   We hadn’t killed the witch as she just wasn’t there, but we could still spit in her face a bit.   One last task awaited us before we could head for Whitethrone.   During the battle Radosek had managed to cast a blindness spell on Noname.  Poor soul was also afflicted with the feast of ashes or something very similar.   No matter how much he ate, more he would hunger.   We needed to get him healed and though not in our preferred direction the clear choice was to go to Hoarwood.   First to Waldsby to pick up Nadya’s two remaining children, then on to Hoarwood we went.   Farther south we went, away from Whitethrone and the voices mumbling got louder.   Something they were warning me, but what I couldn’t tell.   It is so difficult when they mumble.   We were finally almost to Hoarwood when I realized I must have a sickness or something as I felt weak.   Sure I would heal soon I made a point to take it easy after travel and read as much in the new books as I could.  Surely this would help.   Though it improved my mind, and that of all the party who read the books, it did nothing for my sickness.   In Hoarwood it became clear it was more than just me, it was all of us with the same.   Consulting a priest we learned we were under no curse or disease he knew, but soon we understood.   This weakness was becoming stronger the father from the path of our mission.   The black rider gifted us, but he also lay a terrible burden on our souls.   Finish his mission or we would die from the curse of obligation.   Quickly we arranged to have Noname’s blindness removed and by the next day we resumed our task, north we went.
The day started as the one before, dawn and food and the journey, but by the end of the day we would know our folly.   As we made our way north later in the day we saw birds in the distance.   More of those accursed crows and they were headed for us.  Gathering together and preparing ourselves we awaited the birds.   As they got close, poof, Yoska hid us in an obscuring mist.   There we continued to prepare and plan.   I made myself invisible and stepped out.   Two of the bird swarms there were with many birds.   As the mist dissipated, I called upon the powers of summer and alit my burning gaze upon one swarm.   Fire shot out and blasted into them, damaging many and putting others on fire.   My companions also fought and smashed their way through the swarm and soon they were flying away, feathers smoldering.  I checked my companions for wounds and saw that Dalomars were serious.   I waited a few moments and looked again, still serious.   We had just given him a powerful ring of regeneration, any wounds he had should be closing quickly.   For the rink will even regenerate missing limbs and organs.   However, it was soon clear things were not as they should be.   Dalomar not only couldn’t take off the ring, but wounds that would have been minor on him a few days before seemed to have done more than expected.   The ring was cursed and could not be easily removed.   To his credit, Dalomar was quite stoic about this turn of events.   His confidence in us to get him safely where we needed to go and to help him get the curse removed was touching.   Hold on Dalomar I thought.   If we don’t find a way soon, I know my power is growing and I will remove it myself soon enough.
Onward we went.   Much of the travel uneventful, but one event stands out.   We setup camp and put our traps.  As I awoke for my watch I realized many of our smaller items were done and worse, our food all spoiled.  A small slit on the side of the tent showed where something tiny had entered while we slept.  Thinking on the books about fay I had read I realized it must have been a type of gremlin.  We made a cursory check, but it became painfully obvious that we would never find them and that trying was likely proving them good entertainment.   My cold iron spear, my main weapon was gone, but now that we had found much gold and silver, perhaps it was time for an upgrade.
Farther we went and soon had another interesting encounter.   As we approached a small hut in the woods we were spotted by a beautiful read headed woman named Sylgja.   She came up to us and begged us to free her husband Finngarth from the Moss Troll who had captured him or avenge him if he was dead.  Agreeing to take a look we went to the area in question and to the cave she had spotted near where her husband was taken.   Casting invisibility on Repent, I also gave him a potion of invisibility to get Finngarth out of the cave if possible.   In he went and Noname quickly related what was seen.   Not a moss troll, but Finngarth covered in some vegetation making a nesting place.  Noname dscribed it to me and I realized what it was, Mindslaver Mold.   A mold that takes control of sentient beings and makes them its slave.  Fighting the creature was tough as it was bound to Finngarth and often would hide behind his head making it more likely for us to damage his host than the mold.   Repent slapped at Finngarth with a sap to try to put him unconscious without killing him and Sadobras hit with a few sling stones.   Soon all of us joined in the fight and managed to free him from control of the mold.   Healing him and taking him back to his cabin we were received rapturously by Sylgja who was overjoyed to see her husband again.   Hugging us all she also passed some kind of luck to Sadobras.  Mentioning Dalomars curse, Sylgja in gratitude to us also tried to use a scroll of remove curse she had, but it was not powerful enough to remove the ring.  A fine woman I thought as we entered into the hut, but then almost froze in my steps as I saw her tail.   Certainly not human with that, but what was she.   Taking a closer look it became clearer.   Though well disguised, I could see her wooden skin and empty hollow in her back.   My studies had mentioned the Huldra to me, but certainly not said they were of the bad kind.   Thinking upon it I realized exactly why a human and Huldra were living alone in the woods far from society.   People are often cruel to those mixing the races.   Not all of us know that love knows no bounds.  Later as we washed dishes together and I could get her alone I reminded her to be careful with her tail.   Quickly I could see she was worried for her secret, but I reassured her there was no need for any other to know.   Relief flooded her face and I felt sorrow for a world that would make her feel such a secret necessary.

In the morning the happy couple made us breakfast and saw us off- packed well and stocked with supplies for the road.   Onward we journey now to a village on the edge of Whitethrone.   There Nadya knows of person who may be able to get us into the city itself without attention we care not for.   What will be find there?   Is it really true the legendary hut of Baba Yaga awaits within?   Soon we will know…

Radosek Pavril, Reign of Winter

Radosek Pavril, Reign of Winter

From the Diary of Zaaz Bloodfortune

…. The fight continued.   Just as I was starting to despair, Hatch blasted the bitch out the window and I thought at the time, out of this life.   Her body floated down to the courtyard and before we could be sure of the deal was swept up by a great bloody ice troll.   We took a few parting shots and killed off a few of the guards that came out with the beast, but the troll and bitch got away.   Taking stock of our party and strength, I begged my companions to pause the assault.   Inside I was filled with an emptiness of power.   The voices tell me facing the Witch and her apprentice will take all we have, to fight now would be to give them the advantage.
We did our best to block the portal point and holed up in one of the rooms at this level.   Lucky for us Dalomar made a good search of the rooms and found a wee horde hidden in a dollhouse.   So after a few hours, well fed, well rested, and a bit richer we unblocked the portal and went down again to the level below.   I say that casually, we in fact we did dangle Hatch out the window like a minnow waiting a striker so he could peek at the level below to check if the coast was clear.   The level seemed empty so the only real choice was to go back down and clear the level below.   Dalomar and Sadobras went out the window on lines.   The voices in my head became a cacophony, all at once united in their speech and chanted together to me, getting louder and louder as they went, jump, jump, jump, jump!  Out the window I went and to my amazement my hair spread around me, slowed me, and I fell as light as a feather!   Oh thank you ones beyond, for it is almost like flying as a bird.
Once in the courtyard we discovered the door in to the first level was not locked.   In fact, it was not closed and the Ice Troll from before announced our arrival.   Soon the rest of my companions came down as we battled the beast in at the door.   Both of the bitches we found before in the Raven room were both back on their feet and fighting us along with a guard.   Lesson to be learned is leave no evil behind, me thinks.   Sly Noname realized that while all of us were fighting up front, the back might not be and sent repent down the portal to attack their rear.  There he found a fountain and Water elemental and eliminated them as well as did a bit of scouting.   Back to our battle.   We fought much better together.   I actually stayed back in cover where I could throw curse after curse at our enemies to sap their will to fight and cloud their abilities.   Yoska, Dalomar, and Sadobras fought to great effect destroying our enemies and soon the place was quiet.   Even Nadya, who had been struggling to do any damage in combat was somewhat successful.  Searching the bodies we found what we had hoped, the key to the upper level.
Ready to finish the tower off we went up again to the second level and then chose an order to the top.   Up we went one at a time, starting with repent, then myself, and the rest did follow.   In the room at the top we were surprised to find Radosek, the witches apprentice, and his goat.    Floating above it all was a globe of magical power, spinning and pulsing, covered with lines.   Radosek immediately cast into a cauldron he had there and quickly out popped a large group of ice elementals.   Did he really have that much power to summon that many of them, or was there something special about that cauldron?  Repent immediately moved forward to attack the goat and I moved aside in the room to make room for the next to come up.   As I was repositioning in the room I heard a banging from a side door.   The voice of the one inside demanding to be let out was familiar.   I asked who it was and Nadya’s voice asked, “Zaaz?!”   This made no sense, how could Nadya be in there when she was downstairs awaiting her turn to come through the portal?   Before I could find the answer though, a lighting arc hit me hard enough to knock me out.   Why does this always seem to happen to me?!  After a few moments I was woken back up through healing and I took stock of the room.   All of our party was up and there were two Nadyas.  Radosek and his ice elemtentals still battled as well.   Having faith the Nadya from the room was the true Nadya I told her to talk my crossbow and fight.   Quickly she shot the fake Nadya with the crossbow and the two went back and forth.  The rest of the party in confusion fought as well.  Noname dazed the real Nadya, then the fake one attacked Yoska and make it abundantly clear which was which.  Soon through the valiant actions of the party, Radosek, his elementals, and the fake Nadya were killed.   The fake Nadya’s body went through a terrible transformation as it died, first from one form, then to another.  Even at one point it became Lady Argentia Malassene, hinting at some deep plot.   The reality had became painfully clear, this was a vile doppleganger.   The true Nadya was healed and told us her story that she had been taken from town when we went to get healing for our eyes before and had been held captive here in the tower.

Reign of Winter Session #11, The Pale Tower part two

Snows of Summer, Reign of Winter, atop the Pale Tower, Aerie, aviary
Battle atop the Pale Tower, Captain Hestrig Orlov falls, Jairess commands the "Eyes of Nazhena".

reign of winter pathfinder pale tower

Bullet point for the session:

•  Yoska finished off the demon spawn plant as it broke free from it's chains.

•  Guards, their commander, the atomie and a strange creature that doubled in size wielding a halberd came through the teleporters from the 1st floor one by one.  Zaaz cast web on some of them (and Repent) to control the battlefield.

•  The party attempted to use one of the teleporters, but Hatch had the password wrong and the statues next to you came to life and attacked.

•  The Party followed the Ulfen warrior up to the aerie via the other teleporter.  Yoska cast obscuring mist, but the warrior cut the party to pieces as you came through one by one.

•  Hatch eventually threw the warrior out the window into the courtyard below.  Two guard below carried off her body.

•  The commander of the ravens was there with her loyal pets, and the mist was the only thing that kept them at bay.  Noname’s eagles proved to be worth their weight in gold once again.  The swarm did manage to get a piece of Yoska after he had been held in place by a spell from the flying warrior, and his eyes got scratched to the point of blindness again.

Journal entry from Yoska:

Who was she? She could wield a blade that one. My clothes were soaked with blood. No time, I could not let her escape. In pursuit ! What the heck? Another teleporter. Damn! What was that noise? Moans, and chains rattling. Chains breaking! Around the corner, a massive ugly plant root shaped like a man, rushing at me. No time, had to strike with all I got. Electricity dancing along my blade, I struck true and true. It dropped, I could breathe and bind my wounds.
More noise from where we came from ! The guards had found us. No other place for us to go, we all converged to the dining hall with the down teleporters. The guards kept coming at us, but we made our stand, helped by a well placed Web spell from Zaaz. What? Someone was trying to shrink me? Fool, go ahead, what does not kill me makes me stronger. Guards, more guards, their commander, a weird creature that doubled in size wielding a halberd. Eventually they all dropped.
In the silence that ensued we made our way to the teleporter with the red carpet. Hatch said he may know the password. I stepped in and nothing. Except stone grinding noises. Statues animated! We quickly dispatched the stone guardians and moved on to the teleporter that led to the aerie, according to Hatch.

This time the password worked, I could feel myself transported, surrounded by ice. I knew that face, it was the female warrior, no ! Her blade mercilessly struck me as I was arriving. A witch was there too, with her crows dancing around her head. This was a trap. One side step and I cast Obscuring Mist, hoping to shield my friends from the bloody blade of the warrior. One by one, they all came up, but I could hear the blade falling and striking true. I tried. The fog did repel the crows and the witch, for now. That bought us enough time to wound the warrior before Hatch projected her out the window with his magic. She should have died from the fall, but we only saw her body carried away by guards in the courtyard. On to the flying witch ! Noname's eagles attacked her relentlessly to her death. Not before I could feel her insidious magic seeping into my limbs and holding me still, her ravens approaching, talons out. Nothing I could do but feel thousands of daggers scratching at my eyes, my world turning dark again.

Snows of Summer session #9 and #10

Snows of Summer, Session 9:  Vision restored, Yeti, patrols, return to Waldsby-Nadya kidnapped!  On to the Pale tower... Hatch to help!

Reign of winter snows of summer Yeti attack

waldsby snows of summer
Snows of Summer Hatch

• You traveled to Hoarwood in search of a cure for the blindness and were successful (one person healed as you reached town so you waited another day for the other to heal….seems to take several days to heal from bird-scratch blindness).
• You were ambushed at night by a Yeti that made good work of you but finally was taken out.
• You were approached on the road by a patrol that said you needed to surrender your weapons and be escorted back to the Pale Tower to be interrogated by Radosek…. but you just decided to kill them instead.
•  You arrived back at Waldsby only to find that another patrol had taken Nadya to the Tower.
• Hatch, the small Fey (Domovoi) that takes care of Nadya’s household was coaxed into helping the party with info about the tower, and after he was convinced of her kidnapping said he would come to help in her rescue.  He also knows some of the passwords for the teleports between floors, but not all of them.
•  The Pale tower is several stories tall and looks out upon a frozen tundra with visibility for several miles in all directions.  The structure is solid ice, extremely slippery and no exit/entrance except for the main gate that not only has some sort of magical wall of ice that blocks the entrance but a portcullis on the other side of that as well.  There is also an Aerie about 3 stories up from which (play on words) the eyes of the tower, the ravens, reside.

Yoska's journal entry session #9:

Waldsby:
Black. Everything so black. And cold. Damn ravens ! I am supposed to protect Zaaz, I always did. Now she has to lead me by the hand so I don't trip. She is leading us all in this foreign land, as she can speak the language. I must learn it from her, from our host Nadia or anyone else who can teach me. My cousin is dear to my heart but she will cause us trouble, no doubt. That's her nature.
Hoarwood:
I can see again ! We could find a healer in Hoarwood who could cure Sadobras and myself. Praise the old man, I can see again ! The sweet, sweet morning light dancing on the snow. I can practice again. I am so close to master the water dance. The new scimitar from Hoarwood is getting lighter in my hands. The merchant was right, it is money well spent.
On the road between Hoarwood and Waldsby
A group of guards showed up on the road. Sadobras and Dalomar quickly went hiding into the trees, leaving Zaaz, Noname and I to fend for ourselves. Those fools don't know Zaaz, she is unpredictable! The guards are talking too fast with my cousin, I can only get a few words, but I can tell they work for the local witch. The one at the Pale Tower. Suddenly it went very fast. Zaaz whispers with her magic the guards want our weapons, Sadobras rushes out from the trees and fells the leader, my companions attack the rest of them, Zaaz starts floating up in the air. They cannot approach her ! I cut the first one near me, a jolt of electricity dancing along my arm and the shortsword. It's over soon and we are left scrambling with what happened. Noname does not understand why we attacked the guards first, neither do I. But what is done is done. Bodies are buried under the snow. We find a magic mirror on the leader, a witch's device of some sort. Zaaz confirms they were working for the local witch, they wanted us to follow them to the Pale Tower for questioning.
We thought we avoided a terrible fate, until the horror of the following night, huddled by the campfire. A sharp pain wakes me up. Blood on chest. A tall furry creature, like a giant ape, looming over me. The foul smell of its breath. The intense cold coming from it. And those deep red eyes. All I can do is stand on my feet, fear griping my insides, paralyzed. The creature is so close to Zaaz, she tries to conjure up her magic but fails. She has to get away ! Sadobras, Dalomar, and Noname's companion, Repent, try to push the creature back. It is ferocious ! One by one, Dalomar and Repent fall. Zaaz is surely next! That is enough to summon my courage back. Training kicks back in, I clear my mind. Two quick strikes, electricity dancing along my blade, I find a weak spot, close to its heart. The creature drops, unmoving. It was a yeti, someone says. I hope it is my last.
Back to Hoarwood again to fence what we got from the guards and lick our wounds. Then travel back to Waldsby, everybody weary of another encounter with guards, or Desna forbids, the witch's ravens. But this time I will be ready.
Waldsby:
Nadia is gone ! Snatched by the witch's guard and carried to the Pale Tower. Nothing good can come out of that. Not after we told Nadia that the witch probably killed her daughter. Leave it to Zaaz to bewitch the little shy fey servant Nadia keeps around her house. As fate would have it, the fey creature is a former servant from the Pale Tower. He knows a thing or two about it, and finally agrees to come with us as a guide. He seems faithful to Nadia and wants her out of the witch's grasp. So do we.

Snows of Summer, Session 10:  The Pale Tower:  Voice in the road, kleptomaniac bird.   Arrived!  Scale the ice wall into the kitchen in the dead of night....mmmm, cookies!  Hi Nadya!  Hi Mierul- taste my steel!  Follow that Ulfen warrior-woman, oh wait, that's a nasty plant over there.  Why do I feel like I'm about to be in the middle of a fey sandwitch?

•  You traveled a short way towards the tower but were interrupted by the voice of an invisible being.  After a bit of talking it attacked Zaaz and stole Grrr’s cage (with him in it) along with the keys to Baba Yaga’s hut.  It turned out to be an arcane loving Witchcrow and it almost got away with the goods, but you stopped it and found it’s nest and goodies as well.
•  After approaching the tower in the dead of night you all scaled the walls and entered through the kitchen.
•  Noname and Sadobras each tried some cookies…there was one magical one on the tray and it was eaten by one of the two.
•  Dalomar almost scouted the entire 2nd floor before you found Nadya in a room asleep.  She was grateful but surprised to see you all.   She said she had everything under control and had convinced Radosek that you were all just merchant associates of hers from Hoarwood, but you all being here now in the middle of the night uninvited was going to be hard to explain!
•  Dalomar went to the next room and blindly attacked the being that was in the bed, severely damaging but not killing what turned out to be the strange bard that had stayed the night during the storm when traveling towards Waldsby several days ago.  She temporarily talked Dalomar out of attacking but then used her flame bald once her little atomie friends appeared out of nowhere to help her.
•  One atomie escaped through the portal to warn the others below
•  A fierce female Ulfen warrior heard all the commotion and Mierul’s scream from the bedroom and joined the fray, though just temporarily before retreating to the other portal that transports (supposedly according to Hatch) to the level above with the aerie.
•  In the conservatory a strange plant-like creature was found chained to the wall in the corner.

Zaaz Journal entry session #10:

We go into the unknown once again.   All beings long to test their power, but few knowingly go against one more powerful than themselves.   We have gained in our skills and many strange things have happened, but now we meet the first of our real foes.   How strong must she be to command this tower?   How powerful to command the magic mirrors we have found?   Yet, how can we not move against her.   There is a power in desperation, perhaps it will be enough….
In Walensberg we did speak with Hatch about getting into the tower.   Much he told us about it and its environs.  A difficult approach it will certainly be we knew.   Setting forth we moved upon the road towards our goal when we were interrupted by a strange voice.   A Witchcrow it was and it stole my bag with Grrr and the keys to Baba Yaga’s Hut.   Attracted to items of power it was and a first fight it was.   Grrr was almost killed as it dropped him from a great height.   Lucky for us, Noname was more than up to the task of beating this craven crow and with the help of summoned eagles he put a stop to it.   Later we found it’s nest and a few goodies it had left for us.
Onward we journeyed through the bleak winter snows to the tower.   After much debate and discussion we decided to approach it late at night.   Up to it and up on it we went, climbing to a window and entering through the kitchen.   In we went.   Noname and Sadobras had obviously never heard that taking snacks from evil witches is not a good idea as they immediately started eating the cookies they found there.   One of which turned out to be magic in nature.
Dalomar scouted most of the 2nd floor and soon we found Nadya asleep in her room.   Strangely trusting of the witch she assured us that it was all a misunderstanding and that the witch certainly hadn’t killed her child.  She also assured us that she had convinced Radosek that we were merely merchant associates of hers.   While we discussed things, Dalomar continued his scouting and found the strange bard we had encountered before.   By found I mean he attacked her in her bed.   No, not that kind of attack, we are on the side of good you voices!   The evil bard talked him out of his attack for a few moments, but then attacked when some of her Atomie friends showed up to assist.   In the ensuing battle the bard was killed, but one of the Atomies escaped through the portal to warn the others.   A Fierce female Ulfan Warrior also joined the fray before retreating to one of the other portals.
Finishing a bit of exploration on the 2nd floor we also discovered some strange plan creature chained to the wall in one corner.
Now, up or down?   Where do we go and how will we get there.   We know not all of the keys to moving through all of the portals.   Our presence is now known and certainly the enemy will group to attack.   How can we win this day against such odds?   There must be a way….

Reign of Winter, Snows of Summer, Session #8

Pathfinder, Reign of Winter, raven swarm, Snows of Summer, road to Waldsby, Irrisen
Raven swarm on the road to Waldsby:  The eyes of Nazhena Vasilliovna

Through the portal!  Brrrrrrr.  Giant Mantis!  New friends, shelter, food and a visitor.  Ravens from the sky will peck out your eyes.  Really, that's a 3rd level spell?  Harwood is how far?

•  The travelers held their breath and jumped through the portal.  On the other side there was more winter, but the winter seemed to fit here....northern looking trees and shrubs.... and even colder!

•  The party soon found themselves helping another band of travelers that had come under attack by a giant mantis that must have snuck through the portal.  It was cold, hungry and pissed!

•  Nadya Petska thanked the group for coming to their aid, offered shelter, food and a guided trip to the nearest town, Waldsby.

•  On the trip to town the party came under attack by a swarm of Ravens and some were blinded as the birds clawed at their faces...the wounds do not seem to be healing on their own.

Town of Waldsby:

•  Emil and Katrina run the White Weasel
•  Iziamir is the Blacksmith
•  Verana Stolya runs Verana’s Sundries
•  Rolf Salzburg runs the village chapel
• Nadya Petska:
She has a small house on the outskirts of the town and offers you food and shelter.  She has two7-year-old  twin boys, Orm and Mjoli who are looked after by an old woman named Kashka when Nadya is on the road.  When her husband Hjalnek's died, Nadya took over  his trade as a food merchant and importer for the eastern reaches of the Hoarwood including her home village of Waldsby.  She makes multi-week runs on her dogsleds through the forest and tundra.  She also supplies the Pale Tower, but the guards frequently pay her less than she asks.  She feels compelled to provide for them out of fear and because they seem to leave Waldsby alone for the most part and don't harass the villagers as much as in the past.

Diary of Zaaz Bloodfortune Continues…

The voices urge speed, yet I still hesitate to go straight through the portal.   Do we not need supplies?   What of our wagon and gear still in it?    Yet.. Yet..   The voices say go now!   In the end, we have gathered more treasure than all of it was worth in just a few days and also, what is the worth of time lost.   So in we go to who knows where to fight a power that is enough to shake the balance of seasons…
Gathering our gear we hurl ourselves into the midst of the portal and find ourselves elsewhere.   Deep in a northern forest, white and deep with snow and crisp in the air.   The winter wind is strong here and I am reminded of the days of my youth spent on the shores of the northern ices.   Lessons learned there help as I pull tight my winter gear.   This icy cold will freeze the skin in minutes if left unprotected.   Bear grease… I must get some bear grease to cover my delicate skin.  My companions fare not so well not having grown up with this cold.   We must get them to shelter soon…
We take a moment to get our bearings and adjust ourselves, then start our across the snows.  Soon we hear the sounds of battle.  Hoping it’s not something to be wary about, but needing to find some idea of where we are we head towards the sounds.   As we come over a hill we see a sight that is passing strange.   A giant mantis do be fighting a group of humans, one of them grabbed in the mandibles of its mouth.   With a “Hya” to the horse I ride forward as fast as it can go in this snow and toss a hex at the creature.   Did you know that hexes don’t work on insect creatures?   What do you mean you did?   If you voices won’t help, then keep silent.   The travelers were startled by our appearance and keep fighting the creature.  They are mostly ineffective except for a strong female warrior with long blond hair.   We battle the creature back and forth and eventually finish it.
After the battle we meet them as we helped.   It seems they are local villagers traveling with supplies on dog sled and they are led by Nadya, the woman warrior I mentioned.   We travel a bit with them and they are shocked by our lack of winter wear.  They haven’t heard of the portal, but we soon learn they have no love of the winter witches.  We learn we are now in far north Irrisen.   Nadya tells us later in camp that her daughter is being held captive of the local witch Nazhena (The ruling queen Elvanna's great grandaughter).   Tis sad news indeed for soon we realize she is the mother of Thora, the girl spirit we encountered days ago at the strange hut on the road.   Like as this means she is probably no longer retrievable to this world.   Nadya was frustrated and angry learning this, first choosing not to believe us, but later aiming her anger where it belonged, back at Nazhena.
In camp we soon had an unexpected visitor, a strange creature named Mierel.   This strange part fiend, part nymph, is a bard travelling the area.   We are somewhat uneasy with this creature as she seems very curious of us, but her answers are somewhat reluctant to our queries.   Myself I enjoy her songs, but something seems off with her.   After a time we all sleep and in the morning she leaves on her rounds.
We spend most of the next day journeying to Walsby.   Along the way we are attacked by a murder of crows that serve as eyes for Nazhena.   Nadya tried to hide us, but it was not enough.   Fought and beat them away, but not without cost.   Two of our number had their eyes pecked and cannot see.   We aren’t sure how to cure this problem, but we must.   We finish the journey to the village, but find no solution there.   Walsby by the way is a strange place.   It is the mirror image of Heldren as if the two villages are linked.   No coincidence say the voices, but more they do not say.   Me thinks it is indeed a connection, but what?  What I am not sure.
In the village we get warmer gear and a variety of winter supplies.   We also talk with Nadya about what to do and come up with the idea of going with her to the Pale Tower bringing tribute and using that to make our way in.   This witch is of the kind that give us witches a bad name.   Why must some feed on the essence of children?   Lazy, Lazy, mother used to say about them and I must agree.   The shortcut to power twists the soul and makes them drunk with their power.   This one must die once we figure out a solution to the blindness of our members…   Soon we must journey on, but to where?   A larger city to search for the cure, wait here a few days and see if it gets better?   Perhaps instead of tribute for the release of Nadya’s daughter we bring it as payment to cure the blindness…  hmmm…

Irrisen, the land of eternal winter and witches

What the party knows of the icy land beyond the portal, and what they've learned from the locals they've encountered thus far...

Looking down upon the frozen lands of Irrisen

Though some of his thanes objected, the great love and respect the ailing King Ethered had won over his many years ruling Raemerrund carried the day. And so his eldest son, scholarly, introspective, and decidedly unmartial, would assume the Elkhorn Crown, despite possessing neither the prowess nor the intent to slay the linnorms that gave those rough lands their name. Jarguut was clever and sensible, said the old king, and he would lead Raemerrund with wisdom. But fifteen years later, the evil crone Baba Yaga, marching down from the windswept glaciers of the north with her monstrous army, met a kingdom ruled by a Linnorm King who had never earned that title-a king now known as Jarguut the Weak, Jarguut the Unready, and Jarguut the Last.

-From The Conquering Cold: A Brief History of the Winter War

While on the road to Waldsby and carrying on quite a conversation with Nadya, Zaaz solidifies her memories of her mother's (and relative's) teachings of the lands to the north and eventually relays the compiled information to the party:

Nearly 1,400 years ago, the Witch Queen Baba Yaga and an allied army of trolls, frost giants, winter wolves, and icy fey minions swept down from the Crown of the World to crash upon the easternmost Lands of the Linnorm Kings like an apocalyptic avalanche, slaying their formidable Ulfen defenders by the thousands. The first hammer's blow of the Winter War landed on the Linnorm Kingdom of Raemerrund. Under the leadership of studious King Jarguut- a Linnorm King who inherited his crown without performing the legendary quest that title traditionally demands, Raemerrund collapsed like fractured ice in a mere 6 days.  The squabbling thanes of the Djurstor Confederacy to Raemerrund's south managed to resist the onslaught for 17 more days, but they too fell to the otherworldly witch's irresistible army.  In under a month, Baba Yaga conquered two independent kingdoms that had stood for centuries and remade them into the nation of Irrisen, a land swathed forever in bitter, supernatural winter.
But Baba Yaga soon lost interest in her newfound realm. She left Golarion, handing power to her eldest daughter, Jadwiga, who proved herself every bit as capable and cruel as her mother, and established the nation of Irrisen as it's known today. Queen Jadwiga divided her nascent kingdom into four provinces-Bleakmarch, Hoarwood, Thronehold, and Wintercrux-and directed the construction of new cities to serve as provincial capitals, built by the conquered and enslaved Ulfen inhabitants. The new queen awarded her most trusted daughters authority over these lands, granting them the title of duchess. She awarded a fifth province to the capricious and cruel fey who had aided her mother in conquest, granting them the land north of the Frozen Road-now called Feyfrost-and allowing these unpredictable allies to do whatever they wished. A sixth province, the Verge, was later carved out of Wintercrux to guard the border with the Lands of the Linnorm Kings.
The many pastoral Ulfen villages that dotted the countryside before the Winter War died cruel deaths from isolation and neglect over time as Irrisen's endless winter limited travel, eliminated game, and prevented all agriculture. With few exceptions, only towns along the nation's rivers or the shores of Glacier Lake managed to survive in this stark new environment. They rely on fishing and shipments of imported grain and other staples that make the journey along the frigid waterways and snowy land routes from surrounding nations where the seasons still dance through their eternal cycle.
During the century following the Winter War, Queen Jadwiga's armies, led by her male progeny, made many attempts to expand the new kingdom's borders, but the Linnorm Kings and Mammoth Lords on Irrisen's borders kept vigilant watch over their belligerent neighbor and resisted further invasion. Many blamed Queen Jadwiga's failure to continue the conquest of northern Avistan for causing Baba Yaga to return to Golarion 100 years later. Baba Yaga removed Queen Jadwiga and the first generation of her children from Golarion, and crowned the deposed queen's sister Morgannan as Irrisen's new queen. Those descendants of Queen Jadwiga who had held positions of prestige and authority were pushed aside by the offspring of the new queen. Jadwiga's descendants, who resented this affront but were unable to oppose it, assumed lesser roles in the hierarchy, venting their anger upon the enslaved Ulfen folk who made up Irrisen's peasant population and scheming with and against one another for privileges, luxuries, and revenge. This ritual has been repeated every hundred years, with Baba Yaga returning to replace one daughter with another, and taking the deposed queen and the queen's children with her when she leaves Golarion. Elvanna is Irrisen's current queen, and her own centenary creeps closer with every passing day.

Baba Yaga's descendants are known today as Jadwiga, taking their name from Irrisen's first queen, though many outsiders incorrectly translate the term as "children of the witch-mother." By all appearances human, the Jadwiga are a vain, arrogant, and cruel people, proud of their bloodline and the authority and privilege it brings. The many petty rivalries and bloody feuds between Jadwiga clans are all that enables the oppressed lower orders to survive in Irrisen.
Although there are rare exceptions to the rule, female Jadwiga winter witches run the nation's government. These Jadwiga make up the ranks of the White Witches, who are much feared both within Irrisen's borders and without. Male Jadwiga command Irrisen's military.  Ultimately, though, all answer to the reigning queen, whose ruthless vindictiveness is legendary. Most are careful not to earn the ire of their ruler and her most influential progeny.
Sitting at the summit of lrrisen's rather severe hierarchy are the offspring of the reigning queen. Holding positions of power and prestige in the government and military, they are haughty and disdainful of all lower classes. Below this elite are the descendants of lrrisen's previous queens. These Jadwiga make up the broad upper and middle classes of lrrisen, and they are a varied lot. Though most are proud and vindictive, they give reluctant public respect to the Jadwiga Elvanna, lest they anger an aristocrat of real authority and venom. They vent much of their bile upon the unfortunates at the bottom of the hierarchy.
Monsters such as ice trolls, ogres, snow goblins, winter wolves, frost giants, and cold fey come next in the pecking order. Allies of the Jadwiga, these creatures live either  in the major cities of Irrisen or in scattered tribes across the snowy wilderness.
Merchants, visiting scholars, and other foreigners make up the next rung of the social hierarchy. These folk tread very lightly in Irrisen if they are wise, and are rarely seen outside the nation's major cities. Their presence in Irrisen is tolerated for the most part as essential for the nation's economic health, but this does not mean that individuals can't run afoul of their betters. The potential rewards for trade with Irrisen are immense since the land depends so heavily on imported foodstuffs, lumber, and other goods whose production is taken for granted by nations that experience four seasons. But the dangers in this strange place are legion, and there are countless tales of those who came to the Land of Eternal Winter thinking to make their fortunes and found their dooms instead. Still, those who master the contradictory art of being at once bold and cautious can reap enormous wealth.
Descendants of the Ulfen survivors of the Winter War lie at the bottom of lrrisen's brutal hierarchy, though their resemblance to the Ulfen people of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings has been utterly erased. Their culture is now an inward and frightened one, filled with primitive superstitions and odd customs. This peasant class makes up the bulk of Irrisen's population, scraping out a meager existence in towns and villages along Glacier Lake and Irrisen's rivers.  Most Jadwiga consider these settlements insufferably backward and dull, and a posting to one is seen as exile or worse-few Jadwiga live in such places willingly.

Random facts known about the region... either acquired through conversation with the locals, remembered from books during your schooling, or pulled from your childhood memories as fragments from stories told to you by your elders.

•  After 1,400 years of winter, nearly all growing things in Irrisen are long dead or locked in eternal hibernation. The great birches, elms, and oaks of the forests are bare of leaves, and only tall evergreens such as firs, pines, and spruces provide a green break to the endless blues and whites of ice and snow. The coniferous winteryew tree, believed to have been brought to Golarion from some far-off world by Baba Yaga, is absolutely essential to the survival of many species of Irrisen. Winteryews' cones produce edible seeds year-round, and their bark, which grows back even in Irrisen's frigid temperatures when stripped from the trunk, provides nutrition for other animals, including humans. Were it not for the winteryew, known colloquially as the "witch-tree," no wildlife could survive in this wintry land.
 •  Vault of Silver and Ice:  This valuable mine briefly served as a major source of wealth for Irrisen, until the deadly plague known as chillbane fever issued from its depths. The vault has been sealed ever since, haunted by ghosts and some say demons as well.

•  Hoarwood Forest: Once part of the Djurstor Confederacy and home to a thriving forest culture, the Hoarwood Forest changed dramatically with the coming of Baba Yaga and the cruelty of Irrisen's eternal winter. With the cycle of seasons broken, every deciduous tree in the forest either perished or went dormant, leaving only evergreens. Within a generation, the spread of Baba Yaga's winteryew trees provided enough of a foundation for some of the wildlife to rebound, but the forest was never the same again. Since the reign of Queen Jadwiga, logging in the forest is strictly regulated, and woodcutters or lumberjacks must be licensed in the city of Hoarwood before they can cut even a single branch or face a death sentence if caught. Beyond these few woodspeople, the wild reaches of the forest are home to asocial fur trappers and multiple tribes of boreal ogres, snow goblins, and taiga giants, who are often too busy fighting one another to make trouble for the small settlements sheltering under the forest's eaves. Many stories of wandering, restless spirits are told across the province-tales of ghostly parties of mounted huntsmen, lone weeping women, and incorporeal wolves hungry for the flesh of the living. Traveling in the Hoarwood off one of the established trails is an endeavor that should not be undertaken lightly.

•  Hoarwood: The city of Hoarwood is unique in all of Golarion- an entire settlement housing nearly 9,000 souls, carved from a gigantic oak in the middle of the eponymous forest. The tree, believed to have been planted by Gozreh himself at the dawn of time, was sacred to the druids of Irrisen's conquered native Ulfen population. Rivers of blood from the leaders of their brief uprising were used to kill the once-mighty tree. The tree is 500 feet in diameter at its base, and towers thousands of feet in the air. Not all of the city is built within the tree-a large portion nestles among the tree's sprawling roots, and is home to a majority of Hoarwood's peasants. Most of the city's Jadwiga inhabitants, however, reside above the rest of the city along a broad avenue carved into the great trunk in a counterclockwise corkscrew. This concourse rises hundreds of feet into the air where the first massive branches emerge from the tree's trunk, winding past hundreds of rooms, balconies, patios, and overhangs painted in vibrant colors and decorated with the delicate gingerbread woodwork so common in Whitethrone. It took hundreds of carpenters, artisans, and woodworkers conscripted from every corner of Irrisen more than 4 years to complete the monumental task, a masterpiece of design that continues to inspire wonder. Though it is said that Duchess Anelisha herself has a map of the city in its entirety, many believe that no one knows every twist and tunnel within the immense interior, riddled as it is with hidden passageways and secret chimneys. The city proper stops at the tree's first branches; its upper reaches are reserved for the duchess's Arboreal Palace. The palace is connected by a complex system of elevators operated by ice trolls and frost giants.

Hoarwood, city built from a giant oak tree, Irrisen
Hoarwood, city built from a giant oak tree.
 •  Whitethrone: More than just the provincial capital of Thronehold, Whitethrone is the capital of all Irrisen.  Baba Yaga established the city as her capital on the ruins of the Raemerrund capital of Elkswoad, literally paving the new city's roads with the skulls of slain Ulfen warriors. Whitethrone sits on the frigid northern shore of Glacier Lake. Its most distinguishing characteristic is the diversity of its populace: Jadwiga, Ulfen, dwarves, fey, gnomes, ice trolls, snow goblins, and winter wolves all live in relatively stable coexistence inside the city. Of course, the majority of the dwarven, gnome, and Ulfen residents are slaves-save for visiting merchants, diplomats, and adventurers, most of whom confine themselves to the Merchants' Quarter that girds Whitethrone's Market Square.
Queen Elvanna rules all of Irrisen from the Royal Palace, a magnificent structure of ice sitting atop an enormous ice pillar that rises 200 feet from the surface of Glacier Lake. The palace towers10 stories high, with at least as many dungeon levels in the ice pillar on which it sits. The queen's many offspring, the Jadwiga Elvanna, scurry through the labyrinthine hallways and chambers of the palace, carrying out their business of running the wintry nation and seeing to it that their mother's wishes are carried out.
 •  The Cold Sisters
Of all the bureaucrats and government officials who run Irrisen, perhaps none are as feared as the Cold Sisters, an order of winter witches based in Whitethrone and charged with rooting out insurrection and enforcing Irrisen's strict laws throughout the land.  The Cold Sisters tour the provinces, seeking evidence of malfeasance or double-dealing among peasants, foreign merchants, and even the Jadwiga. The Cold Sisters find and punish those who would cheat Whitethrone of its due, and are harsh, cruel, and relentless. A fugitive from their justice has little choice but to flee the country, for they will never give up the hunt as long as their quarry remains within the borders of Irrisen. The Cold Sisters are also feared for their savage and inventive tortures. Indeed, it is not uncommon for prisoners to commit suicide rather than surrender themselves to the mercy of the Cold Sisters.
Cold Sisters wear hooded robes of unsullied white, their faces obscured by a misty frost that dances about their heads. They address one another as "adored sister," regardless of rank, and assume names only when charged with a very specific task or when temporarily replacing a government official recently removed from her post.

Holidays in Irrisen

The people of Irrisen celebrate a few holidays unknown elsewhere on Golarion.

Pjallarane Day (1 Abadius): Like so many things in Irrisen, the celebration of the NewYear has its roots in rather dark soil.  The holiday extends back a thousand years to the day Queen Pjallarane and her children resisted leaving Golarion with Baba Yaga. The day long rebellion ended with the first-generation Jadwiga Pjallarane crucified along the banks of Glacier Lake from Baldachin
to Ytterjorna, covered in tar, and set aflame as a rather dramatic warning to others who would resist Baba Yaga. The festival is celebrated with a feast and rituals echoing that day, such as burning effigies made of tar and straw.

Feast of Szurpada (26 Rova): This "celebration of plenty," as Queen Urvalane dubbed it, serves to supplant and mock the traditional harvest festivals once observed by the Ulfen people of Irrisen, and always includes one dish served cold and raw. For an Irriseni peasant, that dish is likely the only one. For Jadwiga, however, this feast is an opportunity for obscene displays of wealth and unrestrained gluttony.

Festival of the Witch (30 Lamashan): This festival celebrates witchcraft and the central role it plays in daily Irriseni culture. Pranks ranging from harmless to unforgivably cruel are played on the uninitiated. The holiday's climax involves the burning of a prisoner who has impersonated a witch, rather than the usual punishment of the loss of a hand or an eye.

Baptism of Ice (24-30 Neth): Children born the preceding year are paraded down city streets or through town squares attired in their finest clothing during this week-long fertility festival. The culmination involves the sacrifice of a peasant child by exposure to the cold.  For most towns this ritual is merely symbolic, but in Whitethrone and Irrisen's provincial capitals, this barbaric custom is all too real.
